Deactivation of Railway Crossings

Project Brief
I designed this branching-scenario eLearning activity for a railway client. The client needed to train signal and communications maintainers and supervisors—who are in charge of maintaining railway crossings—on the correct and full application of a safety standard for deactivating railways crossings. The analysis revealed that the target audience was familiar with the content. Still, they had become complacent and were not applying the process as required, which led to accidents and near misses.
In collaboration with the SMEs, I identified the most common errors or shortcuts maintainers were making. I introduced a team of characters based on the background and profile of real employees and used the client’s report of accidents to flow the story for the scenarios and simulate the real-life job challenges. Participants received feedback so they could reflect on the possible consequences.
My Role
I was the lead instructional designer for the whole project. I did the analysis, gathered content, and prepared the storyboard. I worked with a graphic artist and developer to integrate the content in Articulate Storyline 360.
